The Futures Academy

Ruth Kelly, BSc, PhD (UL), is a post-Doctoral Research Fellow and Arnold F Graves Scholar at The Futures Academy with a background in sustainable development at local and regional level in Ireland . She recently acted as advisor to the United Nations Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and to the preparation of Towards a Green Isle: local sustainable development on the island of Ireland for the Centre for Cross Border Studies in June 2004. Current projects include the development of scenarios for the future of the global city (in association with the Urban Land Institute); the development of scenarios for the future of enterprise in Ireland (in collaboration with the Enterprise Strategy Group); and the development of scenarios for the future of the city of Lincoln , UK (in association with the University of Lincoln ).

As part of the Irish Environmental RTDI Programme 2000-2006, Ruth was involved in a project to meet the immediate needs of the Irish National Spatial Strategy (NSS). In addition to providing an input into the NSS, this research also laid the foundation for longer-term work on understanding the relationship between settlement patterns and sustainable development in Ireland . Dr. Kelly also worked on a separate project under the National Development Plan 2000-2006 to develop a best practice Environmental Management System for the surface and aggregate mining industry in Ireland . She has published widely on a range of issues related to sustainability.
